ELEVEST® Procedure for Uterine Prolapse Repair - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What exactly does an ELEVEST procedure do?
A: With uterine prolapse, the uterus has fallen down into the top of the
vagina, out of its normal position in the pelvis. The uterosacral
ligaments are strong structures at the base of the uterus that hold it
in position. When those ligaments are weakened or damaged, uterine
support is compromised and the uterus may fall. The ELEVEST procedure
restores the uterus to a more normal position by shortening and strengthening
the uterosacral ligaments.
Q: What causes uterine prolapse?
A: There are many factors that contribute to uterine prolapse
and the condition occurs frequently in women, especially middle-aged women.
Contributing factors include age, hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy
and menopause, childbirth, pregnancy, chronic coughing from smoking, bronchitis,
allergies, physical labor like heavy lifting or extreme sports. Young women who
have had multiple pregnancies or extreme physical labor may also experience prolapse.
Q: What are the symptoms of uterine prolapse?
A: Many women experience a sense that "something is falling out."
Others have problems with urine leakage or urine retention, problems with bowel
movements, pelvic pain or pelvic heaviness or painful intercourse. Symptoms vary
and should be evaluated by your physician to determine your exact condition.
Q: How is uterine prolapse usually treated?
A: Your doctor may initially recommend performing Kegel exercises to
strengthen your pelvic floor. Another option is a pessary - a small, removable
device inserted into the vagina that holds the uterus up in its normal place.
Vaginal hysterectomy has been the traditional treatment for uterine prolapse.
The ELEVEST procedure is a newer and improved laparoscopic procedure that preserves
the uterus and the reproductive function, if that is important to the patient.
ELEVEST is designed to correct the problem with uterine support rather than removing the uterus.
Q: Will a uterine prolapse repair like ELEVEST prevent pregnancy?
A: The ELEVEST procedure preserves the uterus, so normal pregnancy may
still be possible after the procedure.
